The Iron Horse Bicycle Classic is a legendary, multi-day cycling festival in Durango, Colorado, featuring road, gravel, and mountain bike races. Its centerpiece is the iconic road race from Durango to Silverton—a 50-mile challenge that traces the historic rivalry between cyclists and the Durango & Silverton steam locomotive. Riders conquer two dramatic mountain passes and a combined elevation gain of 6,700 feet while enjoying the scenic San Juan Mountains and a festive atmosphere filled with additional races, parades, and local celebrations.
COURSE DETAILS
The main road race covers 50 miles, starting in Durango and ending in Silverton, following US 550 and parallel to the historic railway. Riders tackle challenging ascents over Coal Bank and Molas Passes, cresting above 10,000 feet, with steep climbs, highway straights, and narrow sections along the way. The event also includes gravel and mountain bike options.
